Conservation and community development

Brocon's Song Saa Private Island typifies the company's approach to environmental and social responsibility, and sets the bar high for future projects.

Brocon recognizes that healthy investments depend on the environments in which they exist.

For this reason, the company has set up a marine reserve extending beyond the reefs surrounding Song Saa, providing a haven for endangered species such as dugong, green turtles and seahorses.

Song Saa's biologist monitors and catalogues marine and terrestrial species, checks on water quality, nurtures the resort's coral and mangrove nurseries, and guards against illegal fishing.

Unsustainable fishing practices have long been a problem in Cambodia so Brocon is engaged in programs to share sustainable methods with communities around Song Saa.

Since these programs began, there has been a dramatic change in local fishing practices and illegal fishing in the resort's marine reserve has been slashed.

Brocon has also sponsored programs promoting small-scale aquaculture and agricultre projects for local communities.

It is also helping to fund local health and education initiatives, with a portion of Song Saa's revenue to be given back to local communities.
